CoR on tour: CoRsafe takes part in safe container loading seminars across Australia
Eight cities. Four questions. And one goal: Safer container transport.
CoRsafe recently hit the road as part of the Safe Container Loading & Transport Practices Seminar series, a national tour that brought together more than 600 industry professionals to discuss best practices in container logistics.
Hosted by Container Transport Alliance Australia (CTAA) in collaboration with Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA), the Australian Peak Shippers Association (APSA) and CoRsafe, with support from the Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI), the seminars explored the latest insights and resources designed to improve safety, efficiency and compliance in container logistics.
Across eight sessions in cities around the country, including Brisbane, Toowoomba, Sydney, Melbourne, Shepparton, Wagga Wagga, Port Adelaide and Fremantle, participants delved into best practices for packing cargo, correctly restraining loads, and safely transporting shipping containers.
An expert line-up of speakers was on-hand throughout the tour to share their knowledge, including representatives from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) and National Transport Insurance (NTI), as well as legal, biosecurity and cargo restraint experts.
CoRsafe’s very own Supply Chain Technical Manager, Aaron Louws, played a central role in the tour, leading an engaging session on safe container practices. Aaron also anonymously surveyed audience members in each city, asking four simple questions about the Chain of Responsibility (CoR) and their experiences with common container transport issues.
“The aggregated data revealed a strong industry-wide understanding of CoR, though many participants felt there was still more to learn,” Aaron says.
“It was especially encouraging to see a very low number of participants expressing genuine concerns about issues like inaccurate verified gross mass, or container load restraint practices – it shows we’re headed in the right direction.”
Affectionately known as the ‘QR Code King’ throughout the tour, Aaron also used the codes to provide attendees with exclusive early access to CoRsafe’s Safe Container Loading and Transport Guide.
Published in partnership with CTAA, the Safe Container Loading and Transport Guide provides practical, clear comments on understanding legal obligations and implementing good practices for container loading and transport.
Attendees were encouraged to share the Guide – which is now available to download – with their overseas partners to ensure proper standards are followed when loading containers bound for Australia.
“The Guide was written with overseas suppliers in mind,” Aaron says. “There is a lot of content readily available for an Australian audience on container transport and handling practices, but the thing that sets the Guide apart is how it conveys Australian requirements to people who won’t be familiar with things we can take for granted.”
In the end, Aaron says the sessions provided an unmissable opportunity to connect with professionals across the country, share expertise, and learn from the community.
“It was incredibly rewarding to present CoRsafe’s offerings alongside a range of industry heavyweights,” Aaron adds, “including Scott Walker from Mondiale. Scott’s session was a standout for me – he provided relatable insights into the transport operator’s perspective on safe container handling, and the daily challenges they navigate.”
Aaron’s perspective was shared by fellow participants like Claude Ayrton, Business Manager at X-Pak.
“[Container shipping is] an extremely challenging, complex and high-pressure environment, where the risks to human life and cargo alike are all too great,” he posted.
“It was heartening to see that even with all these sometimes seemingly insurmountable challenges, there are so many passionate individuals working together to find better, safer ways to improve our industry.”
It’s safe to say we’re already looking forward to the next tour, as we continue to support safer, more efficient container transport practices.
